Scientific or graphing calculator? What do students need to buy?

As your kids grow older and get older, the list of school supplies could become shorter, but it's still not guaranteed to be less expensive.

One thing that could cause sticker shock to parents of middle and high school students is a specially designed calculator. Most schools prefer students to are equipped with a handheld scientific calculator. For the most advanced math classes, like AP Calculus for example, a graphing calculator may be required.

But, what's the real difference? A scientific calculator can perform tasks beyond subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. A scientific calculator typically has specific buttons for parentheses trigonometric functionsand exponents, inverses and pi -- as well as other functions.

A graphing calculator does even more. It has a bigger screen, allowing you to enter a formula, after which you can see a graph for it.

However, Best Buy says you aren't required to purchase one. Best Buy suggests checking with your school first.

"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."

These types of calculators are good for AP testing. Weinberg further states that schools have a system for students to check out calculators in the same way as they would text books if they can't or do not want to purchase their own.

Within the Edmonds school district the calculators are handled in the same way as textbooks, with regard to damages or losses, however, they do not have a fee to use.

Another option could exist in the laptops that schools provide. Weinberg says the district of Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district also encourages teachers to utilize Desmos online calculators, since they can be used in state-wide tests and also on state assessments.

West Seattle family says school policy on quarantine is biased against children who are not vaccinated

SEATTLE A family from West Seattle say their young son was instructed to stay at home when his contact with one who was positive for COVID-19. This prompted his family members to assert that he was singled out and being treated differently by school district officials since the boy was not vaccine-free..

This week, a 12-year-old student attending Denny International Middle School was exposed to someone in class who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Officials at his school instructed him to stay at home for two weeks since he has not been vaccinated.

His family members have discovered that, had he received a vaccination, the 7th grader would not have been forced to miss class so when he didn't exhibit symptoms of the virus.

"My kid has no symptoms," said Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's perfectly healthy. Why can't he just get an unbiased COVID test, and come back to school?"

Gollyhorn stated that his son is being placed under a different set of standards as students who have received their shots. And even in the event that he failed a COVID-19 result, the child wouldn't be allowed back to school until the two-week quarantine time has ended.

Close contacts that are fully immunized and have no symptoms don't need to undergo quarantine. They are able to return to classes, although they are advised to be tested for the disease three to five days later for confirmation.

Gollyhorn said it makes no sense.

"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" said the doctor. declared.

It is unclear how many employees and students have been instructed that they must be quarantined due to exposures. However, absences from school are considered to be excused.
